  • Biography:
  • Since her first book, Monkey Grip (1977), Helen Garner has led several major transformations in the Australian literary scene. Her fiction – most notably Monkey Grip, The Children’s Bach and Cosmo Cosmolino – stretched traditional definitions of the novel form, while more recently her long-form non-fiction books challenge expectations about the presence of the writer and the use of fictional techniques in the creation of fact-based narratives. Her transformation of the ‘true crime’ genre, most notably, draws her readers, with her, into exploring questions of justice, guilt and personal responsibility, and the writer’s role in bearing witness to the sufferings of others.
