Brian Nelson was educated at the universities of Cambridge and Oxford. He spent a year in Paris as Lecteur d'anglais at the Ecole Normale Superieure, rue d'Ulm, before being appointed in 1973 to a lectureship in French at Aberystwyth University. In 1985 he was appointed Professor of French at Monash University.
He was founding President (1994-96) of the Australian Society for French Studies, and President (2007-15) of the Australian Association for Literary Translation. He has been editor of the Australian Journal of French Studies since 2002.
He is best known for his critical studies and translations of the novels of Emile Zola. In 2015 he was awarded the NSW Premier's Prize for Translation. His latest publication is The Cambridge Introduction to French Literature (2015).
