  • Biography:
  • Franz-Josef Deiters is an internationally recognized scholar. He read German Literature, Philosophy and Linguistics at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (Germany) where, in 1997, he received his Dr. phil. (PhD), and, in 2004, he was awarded the Habilitation (Higher Doctorate). In 2006, he accepted a position in German Studies at Monash University where he continues to work to the present day.

To date Deiters has published four single-authored books with internationally leading publishers such as Erich Schmidt Verlag (Berlin) and Rombach Verlag (Freiburg i.Br./Berlin/Vienna). Following the publication of the first two volumes of his major research project on the mediology of theatre ("Die Entweltlichung der Bühne: Zur Mediologie des Theaters der klassischen Episteme", 2015; and "Verweltlichung der Bühne?: Zur Mediologie des Theaters der Moderne", 2019), Deiters’ research focuses now on the neo-avant-garde theatre of the early 21st century. This will result in the publication of the third and final monograph of that series, the first volume of which attracted very positive reviews in journals such as the "Kleist-Jahrbuch" (2017), the "Goethe Yearbook" (2018), and "Études Germaniques" (2019).

In addition, his research areas range across the history of German literature and culture from the 18th century to the present, and the fields of literary and philosophical aesthetics.

Franz-Josef Deiters has held visiting appointments at the University of Sarajevo (2005), Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt/M (2006), the University of Bergamo (2018), and the University of Leipzig (invitation accepted for 2020).

He is a co-editor both of "Limbus: Australian Yearbook of German Literary and Cultural Studies" (2008-2019: Rombach Verlag, from 2020: Noms Verlagsgesellschaft), and the book series "Transpositions: Australian Studies in German Literature, Philosophy and Culture" (2010-2019: Röhrig Universitätsverlag, from 2020: Erich Schmidt Verlag). Moreover, he is a member of the editorial board of the book series "vita activa" (Wilhelm Fink Verlag/Brill Group Germany).

Franz-Josef Deiters has published widely on German literature, theatre, and the intersections of literature and philosophy. He has given conference papers and invited lectures at universities and academic societies in Australia, across Europe, and in the United States of America. He is a member of several academic associations, including the German Studies Association of Australia (GSAA), the Internationale Vereinigung für Germanistik (IVG), the Goethe-Gesellschaft in Weimar, the Deutsche Schillergesellschaft, the Heinrich von Kleist-Gesellschaft, and the Hugo von Hofmannsthal-Gesellschaft.
