Professor Linda Barwick is a musicologist whose work is central to the preservation and understanding of Australia’s indigenous music and cultures, as well as those of various immigrant communities in Australia. She was the inaugural Director of PARADISEC (the Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures), which specialises in the preservation and access to field recordings of endangered languages and cultures of the Asia-Pacific region. She has studied community music practices through fieldwork in Australia, Italy and the Philippines. Themes of her research include analysis of musical action in place, the language of song, and the aesthetics of cross-cultural musical practice.
Professor Barwick also publishes on theoretical issues, including analysis of non-Western music, and research implications of digital technologies. She speaks Italian, French and a smattering of various other Australian, European and Asian languages.
