Biography
Malcolm Choat is Professor of History and Head of Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University. He gained his PhD at Macquarie in 2000, with a thesis on Laity and Leadership in fourth-century Egypt. Since then he has gained an international reputation for his contribution to the study of Egypt in Late Antiquity, with a focus on the history of Christianity and rise of monasticism in Egypt, and scribal practice in Greek and Coptic documentary papyri, with publication projects on monastic letters, scribal practice, and forged papyri.
His current research interests centre on discourses of authenticity and forgery, the ethics of studying the past, debates over cultural heritage and the antiquities market, and the reception of the ancient world.
