Rachel Nordlinger

Biography

Rachel Nordlinger has made important contributions to the study, description and documentation of indigenous Australian languages, and to the development of linguistic theory in a diverse range of areas across syntax, morphology, semantics, phonetics and phonology. She has a well-established international reputation in theoretical syntax and morphology, with a record of publication in Australian Indigenous languages and linguistic theory that includes six books and 54 peer-reviewed papers. Over the past 25 years she has worked with a number of Aboriginal communities to record and preserve their traditional languages and has led collaborations with national and international scholars, with students and with community members, in the development of language documentation methodologies that meet the needs of communities. Her research has received funding from the Australian Research Council and from other international agencies, and she is a Chief Investigator, and leader of the ‘Shape of Language Program’, in the current ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language. She is currently Professor at the University of Melbourne and Director of the Research Unit for Indigenous Language.
