Gerard Goggin

Biography

Gerard Goggin is an internationally renowned scholar whose research focuses on social, cultural, and political aspects of digital technologies, especially the internet and mobile media and communication. Professor Goggin’s research explores issues of access and equity, social exclusion, disability, digital technology, and human rights, moving from studies of particular new media phenomena to general rethinking of media and culture, their associated policy and regulatory formations, and implications for everyday life, society, citizenship and justice.

Professor Goggin currently chairs the Global Media Policy Working Group of the International Association of Media and Communication Research (elected 2016), is the Founding Editor of Internet Histories (2015-present), and the founding board member of the peak body Australian Communications Consumer Action Network.

His longstanding commitment to engaged and policyrelevant research has resulted in notable research impact, being taken up by policymakers, consumer groups, and industry, as evidenced by a range of invitations to provide addresses, advise on policy, and participate on committees and commissioned interdisciplinary research projects founded by the Department of Broadband, Communications and Digital Economy.

Gerard has published 20 books and over 170 journal articles and book chapters and is the inaugural Professor of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney, a position he has held since 2011.
