Biography

Bernard Dexter Hoyos is a leading scholar of the Punic Wars and early Roman and Carthaginian history. The author of six books, co-author of four and with more than 20 journal articles to his name, Professor Hoyos has produced a remarkable record which has led to many favourable reviews of his work. He has won critical praise for providing a clear and detailed analysis of the origins of two of the most important wars of antiquity, for his work on the Carthaginian Barcids, and for his influence on the current generation of scholars of middle-Republican Roman history. He has also published extensively on other aspects of Roman and Carthaginian history including Hannibal’s route over the Alps.

He is Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History, School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry (SOPHI) at the University of Sydney.
