Biography

Yingjie Guo is currently Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Sydney. Before coming to Australia he was a lecturer at Shanghai International Studies University and has since held teaching positions at the University of Technology Sydney, the University of Tasmania and the University of New England. He is a leading scholar of cultural politics in contemporary China who has made major contributions to the scholarship on Chinese nationalism, the cultural politics of national identity, and the discourse of class in post-Mao China. His research on Chinese nationalism is widely accepted in the field as having inspired theoretically informed distinctions between varieties of nationalism, leading to more conceptual clarity and more nuanced understandings of this important ideology and construct. His publications are adopted as required and recommended reading in numerous undergraduate and postgraduate courses related to Chinese nationalism and social stratification in post-Mao China. He is continuing to research and publish in these fields, focusing on a monograph ‘Going Back to Cultural Roots: The Nationalisation of the Chinese Party-State’.
