Biography
Professor Chen is a socio-legal scholar and an international authority on Chinese law. His work focuses on the political, economic, cultural, historical and comparative contexts of Chinese law and its development. His principal academic works examine the inter-relationship and interaction between societal change and legal development, providing insights into both Chinese society and its legal system. His work has been praised as €œan entirely fresh treatment of Chinese law that is ambitious in both its breadth and depth.
Professor Chen has authored, co-authored or co-edited more than 20 books and over 80 book chapters and journal articles. His 1995 book From Administrative Authorisation to Private Law: A Comparative Perspective of the Developing Civil Law in the People’s Republic of China remains an important in-depth analysis of the most important aspect of the Chinese legal system: the conceptual foundation of civil and commercial law in China. His book Chinese Law: Context & Transformation (now in its 3rd edition) is widely held as a principal source for the study of Chinese law and its transformation in English.
He is Professor of Law at La Trobe University and has been a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law since 2008.
