Biography

Emeritus Curator, State Library of New South Wales and Honorary Associate of the School of Philosophical and Political Inquiry, University of Sydney. Senior Curator, Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, 2002-12. Worked with the Mitchell Library’s Australiana collections from 1973 and was Curator of Manuscripts, 1986-2000. Curator of the exhibition Matthew Flinders: The Ultimate Voyage which travelled nationally from 2001-03. Curator of the Mitchell Library centenary exhibition, One hundred (2010). Published on archives administration and various aspects of the State Library’s collection. Publications include ‘Awake, Bold Bligh!’ (1989); ‘The Endeavour Journal of Joseph Banks: The Australian Journey’ (1998); ‘Matthew Flinders: Personal Letters From an Extraordinary Life’ (2002); ‘The diaries of Miles Franklin’ (2004); and with Elizabeth Ellis, ‘A Grand Obsession: The D.S. Mitchell Story’ (2007). President of the Australian Society of Archivists, 1991-93. Currently preparing an annotated edition of the original handwritten journal and logbook of William Bligh kept on HMS Bounty, 1787-89.
