Biography

Born in Glasgow and attended Hutchesons’ Boys’ Grammar School, Glasgow 1956-65. Studied at Glasgow University 1965-69 and graduated MA with First Class Honours 1969. Read for BPhil. in Classics at Balliol College, Oxford 1969-71: awarded BPhil (subsequently redesignated MPhil) 1971. Gained Oxford Golf Blue 1971. Studied for PhD in Classics at University of Toronto 1971-73 (PhD awarded 1979). Lecturer in Classics, University of Canterbury, NZ, 1973-74. Married Patricia Anne Whatley in 1973 and emigrated to Australia in 1974. Lecturer in Latin (1974-83), Senior Lecturer in Latin (1984-91), Senior Lecturer in Classics (1992-2003), and Senior Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History (2004-05) at University of Sydney.
