Biography

John Sinclair is an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. His research concerns the globalisation of the media, with particular reference to the television and advertising industries, and with a special emphasis on the role of cultural factors in their development. This work has a regional focus on Latin America and Asia. He has Spanish as a research language.

In the years since his last monograph, Advertising, the Media and Globalisation (2012), he has published a number of refereed journal articles; two co-edited books; a co-authored book; and several chapters in books and reference works.

A former ARC Professorial Fellow, granted for his globalisation work, he has since been an investigator on other ARC projects, namely on lifestyle media in Asia, and the history of the advertising industry in Australia. He has held visiting professorships at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, where he was UNESCO Professor of Communication, and at the University of California, San Diego, the University of Texas at Austin, and other universities in the United States, and also in Latin America.

He was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 2001. He was Chair of the Cultural and Communications Studies Section, 2010-2012, and a member of Awards Committee 2013-2018.

In 2022 the Association of Iberian and Latin American Studies of Australasia awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award to Professor John Sinclair, the citation said, ‘in recognition of his decades of research and leadership in Latin American Studies.’
