Biography
Graeme Turner FAHA is Emeritus Professor of Cultural Studies in the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Queensland. A former President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (200407), founding Director of the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland (200012), a Federation Fellow (200611), and convenor of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Cultural Research Network (200610), Emeritus Professor Turner is one of the leading figures in the humanities in Australia.
His research has covered a wide range of forms and media literature, film, television, radio, new media, journalism, and popular culture. He has published 25 books with national and international academic publishers, and his work has been translated into 11 languages.
Emeritus Professor Turner has had considerable engagement with federal research and higher education policy. He is only the second humanities scholar to serve on the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (200813). With Dr Kylie Brass, he is co-author of Mapping the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences in Australia (2014), and he chaired the Humanities and Creative Arts Panel for the ARC’s Excellence in Research for Australia initiative in 2015 and 2018.
Graeme was awarded Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for distinguished service to higher education through pioneering work in the field of cultural studies and the humanities.
