Biography

Abdullah Saeed is a leading figure in Islamic studies and a significant voice in Islamic affairs in Australia. He enjoys international recognition and has already made a significant contribution to Australian academic life. Saeed is Sultan of Oman Professor of Arab and Islamic Studies and Director of the National Centre of Excellence for Islamic Studies at the University of Melbourne’s Asia Institute. His work combines rigorous scholarship, originality and leadership in engaging critical contemporary issues.

His publications include The Qur’an: An Introduction (2008), Islamic Thought: An Introduction (2006), Interpreting the Qur’an: Towards a Contemporary Approach (2006) and Islamic Banking and Interest: A Study of the Prohibition of Riba in Islam and its Contemporary Interpretation (1996).
