Biography

John Rickard is currently adjunct professor in the National Centre for Australian Studies at Monash University. After completing his BA (University of Sydney) and PhD (Monash University), Rickard was Lecturer and subsequently Reader and Professor at Monash between 1971 and 1998. He has been a Visiting Professor of Australian Studies, at Harvard University, 1997ˆ’8 and Visiting Fellow of Australian Studies at the University of Copenhagen, 2007. He was editor of Historical Studies/Australian Historical Studies between 1989 and 1994 and has served on the Publications Committee of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, of which he is a Fellow, since 1999. In his youth, Rickard worked as an actor and singer, and he maintains a strong connection to the performing arts. He is a supporter of several arts organisations, and has had a long association with the Green Room Association, both as president 1985ˆ’90 and subsequently as a member of the opera panel.
