Michael McRobbie

Biography

Michael A. McRobbie, Indiana University’s 18th president, joined Indiana University in 1997 as vice president for information technology and chief information officer. In 2003, he was given the additional responsibilities of Vice-President for Research. After being named interim Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs for the Bloomington campus in 2006, he pursued priorities for the arts and humanities, the life sciences, and the recruitment and retention of students and faculty. In his newest role, McRobbie, who also holds professorships in cognitive science, computer science, informatics, and philosophy, will continue his efforts to renew the university’s commitment to its two fundamental missions of education and research.

Before joining Indiana University, McRobbie was a Professor in Information Science in the Institute of Advanced Study at the Australian National University and CEO of the Cooperative Research Center for Advanced Computational Systems. In 1987 he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, and in 1988 was a Fulbright Senior Fellow and a Visiting Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. He graduated with a B.A. from the University of Queensland and a Ph.D. from the Australian National University. Most recently he was awarded a D.Sc. (honoris causa) from the University of Queensland.
