Anne McLaren

Biography

Anne E. McLaren studied Chinese language and culture at the Australian National University (ANU), where she was awarded a National University Scholarship. She graduated with First Class Honours in Classical Chinese, and subsequently completed doctoral study at the ANU. Her education was enriched by extensive periods of study at Taiwan Normal University, the Beijing Language Institute, Fudan University, Shanghai, and a period of postdoctoral research at the Fairbank Center, Harvard University. She has taught at a number of universities in Melbourne, including La Trobe University, where she was the Foundation Lecturer in Chinese, and the University of Melbourne, where she is currently Professor of Chinese Studies. Her major research interest is Chinese popular culture from the late imperial to the contemporary period, with a focus on the interaction between performance arts, popular fiction and print culture. She has authored or edited five books and many other studies, and serves on the board of a number of international journals such as Asian Ethnology and Intersections: Gender, History & Culture in the Asian Context. She has served terms as Secretary of the China Studies Association of Australia and as China Councillor of the Asian Studies Association of Australia.
