Biography

Freya Mathews is Adjunct Professor of Environmental Philosophy in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at La Trobe University. She is the author of six books and almost 100 articles in the area of ecological philosophy. Her book The Ecological Self (1991) is considered to have become a classic text in environmental philosophy. Professor Mathews’ expertise, which ranges over metaphysics, philosophy of science, philosophy of religion and history of ideas, is embodied in her writings on environmental philosophy. Her current special interests are in ecological civilisation, panpsychism, conservation ethics, philosophy of biomimicry and indigenous Australian and Chinese perspectives on sustainability. In addition to her research activities, she co-manages a private biodiversity estate in Central Victoria.
