Jim Masselos

Biography

After completing a BA honours degree in history at the University of Sydney, Jim Masselos went to the Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture, St. Xaviers College, the University of Bombay to study for a PhD on a scholarship, later a fellowship, under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Scheme. On completing the degree he returned in early 1965 to the University of Sydney as a temporary lecturer and then lecturer in History. He was subsequently promoted to Senior Lecturer and then Reader in the department. From 1971-72 he studied Marathi at SOAS (the School of Oriental and African Studies) at the University of London and pursued research in the India Office Library, under a Nuffield Dominion Travelling Fellowship. He has successively served as Council Member, Secretary, and President of the South Asian Studies Association, and at various times has been a Council Member of the Asian Studies Association of Australia and the Asian Arts Society and has served on the editorial boards of South Asia, the Asian Studies Review and the TAASA Review (the Asian Arts Society of Australia). He retired from the History Department at the University of Sydney in 2001 and is currently an Honorary Reader in the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry at the University.
