On completion of her doctoral thesis she was elected a fellow of New Hall (now Murray-Edwards College) Cambridge and the following year was appointed to the Modern and Medieval Languages faculty at Cambridge in 1979. She taught there for 12 years before moving to Indiana University, USA. While in the US she was awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation. She retired in 2007 and returned to South Australia. Her main interests are in nineteenth and twentieth-century poetry and prose, especially their relationships with painting.
