Biography
Heather Jackson is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne, in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies. She gained her Honours degree in Classics at London University in 1959, followed by a Dip Ed from the University of Oxford in 1960. She taught Latin, Greek and Classical Studies to the senior levels of secondary schools in Belfast, Northern Ireland, from 1968-72.
In 1973, she emigrated with her family to Melbourne, where she taught Classics first at Melbourne Girls’ Grammar School and then at Presbyterian Ladies’ College. In 1992, she returned to study archaeology at the University of Melbourne, while working annually on the excavation of Jebel Khalid in Syria, which provided the material for her PhD dissertation and many subsequent publications. She also taught a wide range of undergraduate subjects in the Classics department of the University.
She has been the recipient of several grants from the Australian Research Council, including a post-doctoral award in 2004 for her Discovery project on the housing insula of Jebel Khalid. She is an honorary Vice-President of the Classical Association of Victoria. Currently she is supervising doctoral students of archaeology.
