Biography

Rod Home was appointed a lecturer in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Melbourne in 1967. In 1975 he became the University’s first Professor of History and Philosophy of Science. He retired in 2003.

His major interest is in the history of the physical sciences from Newton to the 20th-century, and the history of science in Australia. He has published widely on the history of physics (especially electricity and magnetism) in the 18th-century, and on the history of Australian science, and was the editor of the journal Historical Records of Australian Science, 1984-2014.

The 2017 publication Building the History of Australian Science: Five projects of Professor R W Home (1980-present) outlines five of Rod’s significant achievements and was written by Fellow Libby Robin with Sara Maroske and Gavan McCarthy for Historical Records of Australian Science.
