Biography

Professor John Hajek is chair of Italian Studies, Director of the Research Unit for Multilingualism and Cross-cultural Communication (RUMACCC) at the University of Melbourne, and former Project Leader of the Languages and Cultures Network for Australian Universities (LCNAU).

Professor Hajek is a linguist with extensive experience across a range of languages, specialising in Italian and Romance linguistics, linguistic typology, phonetics and phonology, and Asia-Pacific languages, especially those of East Timor. He has held research and teaching fellowships at Christ Church (Oxford) and Melbourne, and is a past recipient of the Max Crawford Medal awarded by the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
