John Griffiths

Biography

John Griffiths’ career revolves around Renaissance music and culture, especially instrumental music from Spain and Italy. As both a performer and scholar, he maintains a close connection between research and practice. He is best known for his work on the Spanish vihuela and its music although his output reflects broad interests in renaissance music history, early music pedagogy, style studies, organology, music printing, music in urban society, connections between written and oral traditions, music in Spanish Naples, and digital humanities.

Formerly Head of Early Music Studies at the University of Melbourne (1980-2011), he is currently Professor of Music at Monash University, an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the School of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Melbourne, and a research associate at the Centre d’Etudes Supà rieures de la Renaissance in Tours. In addition, he is a Director-at-large of the International Musicological Society and President of the Sociedad de la Vihuela in Spain. He is a past president of the Musicological Society of Australia, a Corresponding Member of the American Musicological Society and an Officer of the Orden de Isabel la Católica.
