Biography

Kate Grenville is the author of eight books of fiction, including Lilian’s Story, The Idea of Perfection, The Secret River, and The Lieutenant. Her fiction has been awarded many prizes, both in Australia and internationally. It has been published in the US and the UK and has been widely translated. Two of her novels have been made into feature films.

A teacher of creative writing, she has also published four books about the writing process, including The Writing Book Making Stories (co-authored with Sue Woolfe) and Searching for the Secret River She is currently working on the third book of a trilogy set in the first 50 years of European settlement in Australia.

She holds degrees from the University of Sydney, the University of Colorado, and the University of Technology, Sydney.
Kate was appointed an Officer (AO) in the General Division of The Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday 2018 Honours List for distinguished service to the literary arts as an author, to the tertiary education sector, to professional societies, and as an advocate for the publishing industry.
