Richard Fotheringham

Biography

Professor Fotheringham went to the University of Queensland in 1979 to teach theatre studies, film and television after a decade working in professional theatre.His publications include a study of Australian plays and films, Sport in Australian Drama (Cambridge, 1992), a biography of the short-story writer and playwright Arthur Hoey Davis, In Search of Steele Rudd (UQP, 1996) which won the 1996 Association for Literary Studies McRae Russell Award for an outstanding work of recent literary scholarship, and an edited collection of nine Australian Plays for the Colonial Stage 1834-1899 for the Academy. He contributed the chapter on ‘Theatre from 1788 to the 1960s’ to the Cambridge Companion to Australian Literature (2000). He also publishes on Renaissance staging techniques. From 1982 to 2002 he was founding joint editor with Professor Veronica Kelly FAHA of Australasian Drama Studies.Richard was awarded Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for significant service to higher education, and to the performing arts.
