Michael Devitt

Biography

Professor Devitt specializes in the areas of philosophy of language and mind, and metaphysics. His current projects include: the philosophy of linguistics the semantics of definite descriptions and demonstratives, and moral realism. He has written books on the semantics of names, on naturalized semantics, and on realism about the external world; he has written papers on a variety of topics including incommensurability, nominalism, naturalism, mental representation, transcendentalism, meaning holism, and the psychological reality of grammars. He has held positions and visited at the University of Sydney, Tokyo Metropolitan University, the University of Southern California, the University of Michigan, the Victoria University of Wellington, and the Australian National University.
