Helen Creese

Biography

Helen Creese completed her undergraduate and PhD studies in Indonesian and Javanese literature at the Australian National University. In 1996, she moved from the Australian National University to the University of Queensland to establish the Indonesian language and studies program which she led until her retirement in 2018. She currently holds an honorary appointment in the School of Languages and Cultures, University of Queensland. Her research interests centre around Indonesian textual traditions in regional languages and include gender history, Balinese history and historiography, regional Balinese and Javanese literature, and contemporary Indonesian literature.She has published a number of literary and historical translations into English from Old Javanese, Balinese, Indonesian and French. Her major books include Parthayana-The Journeying of Partha: An Eighteenth-Century Balinese Kakawin (KITLV Press 1998), Women of the Kakawin World: Marriage and Sexuality in the Indic Courts of Java and Bali (Sharpe 2004) and Bali in the Early Nineteenth-Century: The Ethnographic Accounts of Pierre Dubois (Brill 2016).
