Biography

Ian Copland was educated at the University of Western Australia (UWA) and Balliol College, Oxford. Before his retirement in 2009, he taught at the School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies at Monash University. His research focuses on modern India and Pakistan, Indian religious history, and comparative colonialism, Hindu-Muslim communal relations in the princely and colonial contexts, and the role of religion in facilitating and complicating the business of governance. His earlier work focussed on the politics of the Indian princely states and their relations with the British Raj. Between 2001 and 2010 he edited the journal South Asia. He is a foundation member of the South Asian Studies Association.
