Biography

Professor Clark was Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow in the Department Art History and Theory at the University of Sydney and retired in 2013. He was born in Grimsby, England, and has held Australian citizenship since 1996. His research interests include modern Japanese art since Meiji; Chinese academic painting and the avant-garde; the problems of modernity in art beyond Euramerica; Thai and Chinese art of the 1980s and 1990s; biennales and contemporary Asian art and re-defining ‘the Asian modern’. In 2003 he received the Centenary Medal and supplementary membership of the Comità internationale de l’histoire d’art. In 2011 he was awarded Best Art Book Prize for Asian Modernities: Chinese and Thai Art Compared, 1980 to 1999, by the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand.

His spouse is the Thai painter Phaptawan Suwannakudt.
