Biography

John Butcher was born in Bath, Maine. He did an undergraduate degree in mathematics at Brown University, completed a Masters degree in rural sociology at the University of Wisconsin, and undertook a PhD in history at the University of Hull. John spent two years teaching at a high school in Malaysia as a Peace Corp Volunteer. He taught at Murdoch University from 1977 to 1978 and at Griffith University from 1979 to 2011.

John has written about British colonial society in Malaya, revenue farming in Southeast Asia, the marine fisheries of Southeast Asia, and Indonesia’s archipelagic campaign and currently, in retirement, is doing historical work on Moreton Bay.
