Angela Woollacott

Biography

Angela Woollacott is the Manning Clark Professor of History at the Australian National University and a former President of the Australian Historical Association. From 2004-2009 she was Professor of Modern History at Macquarie University, having previously been a Professor of History at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Woollacott took her BA in Political Science and History from ANU before graduating with Honours in History from the University of Adelaide. After three years as a Research Officer at the Constitutional Museum of South Australia, she earned both an MA and PhD in History at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Her fields of research and publication have embraced British empire and postcolonial history, Australian history, feminist history, colonialism, race and gender, biography, political and transnational history. She has served on advisory panels at the Reserve Bank of Australia, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Historical Research Section; serves on the editorial boards of several journals and has been a visiting professor at Oberlin College; a visiting scholar at Dartmouth College, the University of Melbourne, the University of Adelaide, the University of California, Berkeley, and Oxford University; and a Visiting Fellow at the Humanities Research Centre at ANU.

Her most recent book is Don Dunstan: The Visionary Politician who Changed Australia (Allen & Unwin, 2019) which was supported by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant.
