Biography
Gerard Vaughan is Professorial Fellow in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. He was Director of the National Gallery of Victoria (1999-2012), and, prior to this, was Director of the British Museum Development Trust (1994-99). During his time at the National Gallery of Victoria, Dr Vaughan oversaw the construction of the Ian Potter Centre at Melbourne’s Federation Square, Australia’s first public museum dedicated to Australian art. He also played a pivotal role in transforming the National Gallery of Victoria, notably in terms of raising funds for acquisitions.
His research interests are particularly concerned with the history of the eighteenth and nineteenth-centuries and he has published extensively on subjects as diverse as the history of museums and museum culture, patronage and art collecting, as well as early twentieth-century modernism, and classical heritage.
Dr Vaughan is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and National Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration of Australia.
