Biography

Theo van Leeuwen is Professor of Media and Communications and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Technology, Sydney.

He has published widely in the areas of social semiotics, critical discourse analysis and multimodality. His books include Speech, Music, Sound (Palgrave, 1999), Introducing Social Semiotics (Routledge, 2005), and Global Media Discourses (co-authored with David Machin, Routledge, 2007). The second edition of his Reading Images: the Grammar of Visual Design (co-authored with Gunther Kress) was published in 2006. He is founding editor of the international journal Visual Communication.
