Tim Murray

Biography

Professor Murray joined La Trobe as the first appointment of a new Department of Archaeology established in 1985. Over the next 35 years he served as Head of Department, Professor of Archaeology, Head of School, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and for the last 10 years, has been Charles La Trobe Professor of Archaeology, retiring in 2020. During that time, he held visiting Chairs at the Sorbonne, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Peking, University College London, Goteborg, and Leiden, and taught at the University of Cambridge and the Nordic Graduate School.

He served the local and global archaeology communities by holding numerous editorial roles, serving twice on the ERA Humanities evaluation panel, the archaeology panel of the Heritage Council of Victoria, and was Vice President of the Academy of Humanities.

In 2015 Professor Murray was awarded a Doctor of Letters by La Trobe University and during his time at this university published 21 single and co-authored books; 15 edited books and journal collections; in excess of 135 Journal articles and book chapters, and raised more than $6 million in competitive grants and consultancies awarded in Australia, Europe and the United States.
