David Miller

Biography

David Philip Miller was educated at the Universities of Manchester and Pennsylvania and was Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of New South Wales until 2014 when he retired and was appointed Emeritus Professor. He has served as President of the Australasian Association for History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Science, and Chair of the Australian Academy of Science National Committee for History and Philosophy of Science. He is on the editorial boards of the journals History of Science and the British Journal for the History of Science and is Co-editor of the journal Annals of Science. His research has dealt with the institutional development of science and technology in Britain since the 18th century, with particular focus on the Royal Society, science and empire, and, in recent times, the life, work and legend of James Watt. Other interlocking interests include: the nature of discovery and invention and the relationship between them; the history of patents and intellectual property; the popularization of science and history of science; and the history of industrial science in the U.S.A.
