Biography

Scott McQuire is Professor of Media and Communication in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. He is one of the founders of the Research Unit for Public Cultures which fosters interdisciplinary research at the nexus of digital media, contemporary art, urbanism, and social theory. Scott is a pioneer of research into the mediatization of contemporary cities and is the author or editor of nine books including Visions of Modernity: Representation, Memory, Time and Space in the Age of the Camera (1998), Empires Ruins + Networks: The Transcultural Agenda in Art (2005), The Media City: Media, Architecture and Urban Space (2008, the Urban Screens Reader (2009), Geomedia: Networked Cities and the Future of Public Space (2016), Art Seen Under Digital Light: Photography, The Image, and the Aesthetics of Data (2018), and Communicative Cities and Urban Space (2021). The Media City won the Jane Jacobs Publication Award in 2009 and has been translated into Chinese (2011, 2014) and Russian (2014) while Geomedia has been translated into Russian (2018) and Chinese (2019). Scott has published over 100 essays in refereed journals, edited books and exhibition catalogues and has been Chief Investigator on ten Australian Research Council grants.
