John Kleinig

Biography

John Kleinig was born in 1942. He completed his MA at the University of Western Australia, his PhD (in Philosophy) at the Australian National University, and received a BD from the Melbourne College of Divinity. He was appointed to Macquarie University in 1969, and resigned from there in 1987 at the rank of Associate Professor. In 1984-85, he accepted the offer of a Fulbright Fellowship at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, and in 1986 he commenced an ongoing full professorial appointment at the College, which included appointments in the doctoral programs in philosophy and criminal justice at the City University of New York Graduate Center. In 1990-91, he was Fellow in Ethics, in what was then called the Program in Ethics and the Professions, Harvard University. In 1997-98, he was Laurence S. Rockefeller Visiting Fellow, The University Center for Human Values, Princeton University. He has held various other visiting appointments throughout his career. In 2004, however, he accepted an appointment to be the Inaugural Chair in Policing Ethics, Charles Sturt University (later transferring to Strategic Research Professor), in which he was seconded as a Professorial Fellow in Criminal Justice Ethics, at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics in Canberra. In this latter position he spends the first six months of each year in Australia.
