Jamie Kassler

Biography

Dr Jamie Kassler received her PhD from Columbia University, New York in 1971, where she was Faculty Scholar (1966-67). She then held a Post-doctoral Research Fellowship, Department of Music, Sydney University (1975-77), as well as several Australian Research Council Fellowships at the University of New South Wales, including in the School of History & Philosophy of Science (1979-83), the School of English (1982-87) and the School of Science and Technology Studies (1988-92). She was a founding member (1965) and subsequently editor (1966-67) and editor-at-large (1968) of the Journal, ‘Current Musicology’. She also served as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal, ‘Australian Music Research’ from 1994-2008. Her first book was a two-volume reference work on the science of music, 1714-1830 (1979). Subsequently, her books and articles have concerned the interrelations between music, science and philosophy, and the writings of the polymath, Roger North (1651-1734). In 2003 Dr Kassler was awarded the Centenary Medal for service to Australian society and the humanities in the study of philosophy.
