Biography

Vivien Johnson has been breaking new ground in desert art scholarship for 35 years. She was one of the first to advocate recognition of Papunya painting as contemporary art and the moral and cultural rights of Indigenous artists. Her many writing and curatorial credits include the first monographs on Western Desert artists, the Clifford Possum retrospective, the Lives of the Papunya Tula Artists, and Streets of Papunya: The Re-Invention of Papunya Painting, a 2015-16 book and touring exhibition. She was founding Editor-in-Chief of Design and Art Australia Online.
