Biography

Alison Alexander has retired from her career of writing commissioned histories and is engrossed in a general history of white settlement in Van Diemen’s Land. Her latest book, Tasmania v. British Empire: the battle to end convict transportation was published in 2022. That year she won the University of Tasmania’s Dick and Joan Green Award for Tasmanian History for her biography of artist Patricia Giles, A waking Dream of Art.

Alison is president of Convict Women’s Press which publishes books exploring the world of female convicts; a committee member of the Female Convicts Research Centre; and editor of the journal of the Tasmanian Historical Research Association. She frequently (approximately twenty a year) gives talks to historical and other societies on historical topics.
