Julian Savulescu

Biography

Professor Julian Savulescu is the Chen Su Lan Professor in Medical Ethics at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he directs the Centre for Biomedical Ethics. He holds the Uehiro Chair in Practical Ethics (since 2002) at the University of Oxford, where he founded the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics in 2003, before moving to NUS in 2022. He co-directs the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities in Oxford and from 2025 will co-direct the Wellcome Trust Platform Grant from 2025 with Oxford and NUS: ‘ANTITHESES: A Discovery Platform for Transformative Inclusivity in Ethics and Humanities Research’. He is Distinguished Visiting Professorial Fellow at Melbourne Law School and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, where he directs the Biomedical Ethics Research Group.

His main research interests are in practical and medical ethics, particularly AI ethics, genethics and neuroethics. He has an h-index of 88 and 30,000 citations to his work. In 2023, ScholarGPS ranked him No 1 in medical ethics and No 1 in bioethics for all time, and ranked him in the top 0.01% of all scholars in all fields for the last 5 years. He has an honorary doctorate from the University of Bucharest. He won the Daniel M Wegner Award for Theoretical Innovation, Monash University’s Distinguished Alumni Award and was Australian Society for Medical Research’s National Lecturer and Medallist.
