Felicity Cox

Biography

Felicity Cox is Professor in the Linguistics Department at Macquarie University where she has been in a continuing position since 2002. She is a leader in the field of phonetics. Her work at the interface between linguistics, speech science, culture and identity has transformed the way Australian English is conceived by promoting a shift away from an Anglo-centric model to one inclusive of the rich ethnocultural variation that defines modern day Australia. She has published widely on phonetic/phonological variation and sound change and is the author of influential textbooks for students of linguistics and speech science. Her research has changed the way that Australian English speech patterns are represented and understood, bringing the variety into sharper focus in the national and international research and lay communities. She has received several national competitive project grants from the Australian Research Council and in 2018 she was awarded a prestigious Australian Future Fellowship.

Felicity received a BA(Hons) DipEd in Linguistics in 1982 and a PhD from Macquarie University in 1997. Since 2019 she has been the elected President of the Australasian Speech Science and Technology Association (ASSTA), and she is an Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Linguistics.
