Caroline Bird

Biography

Caroline is a consultant archaeologist based in Western Australia, with research interests in stone artefact analysis, hunter-gatherer archaeology, landscape archaeology and the public understanding of archaeology. She completed a PhD at UWA in 1985. She has worked in diverse roles in university, in the public service, as a consultant and as a freelance writer, educator and researcher, while still maintaining a significant contribution to academic research. She is co-editor of the Journal of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists. Currently, Caroline is particularly interested in how to realise the research potential of the vast amounts of archaeological data collected by consultants as exemplified by her 2020 book, Crafting Country: Aboriginal archaeology in the eastern Chichester Range, North-West Australia (co-authored with J.W. Rhoads). Caroline works closely on projects with Aboriginal communities in Western Australia. One such collaboration led to a publication with the Nyiyaparli community and anthropologist E. McDonald Kakutungutanta to Warrie Outcamp: 40,000 years in Nyiyaparli country which was awarded the AAA John Mulvaney Book Award in 2016.
