Biography

Marguerite Johnson is Honorary Professor (Classics and Ancient History) at The University of Queensland.  Her research expertise is predominantly in the area of ancient Mediterranean cultural studies, particularly in representations of genders, sexualities, and bodies. She is especially interested in the ways in which the ancients write about women, sexuality, and degrees of power. This research theme also underpins her other areas of enquiry, Classical Reception Studies, and ancient magic.

Marguerite’s research regularly focuses on Greek and Latin texts, particularly the poetry of Sappho, Catullus, and Ovid, on whom she is widely published. She has delivered keynotes and public lectures both nationally and internationally and has an extensive media engagement profile as a public historian.
