Biography
Antonia Rubino is a sociolinguist whose research focuses on multilingualism in migration contexts, particularly the use, changes and transmission of Italian, dialect and English in the Italo-Australian migrant community. In this environment her projects have pioneered the analysis of language use within the family, the media, education, and the landscape of Sydney. Antonia’s work has enhanced the understanding of multilingual practices
and demonstrated how migrants are skilled language speakers. Antonia has contributed to developments in Italian language teaching at secondary and tertiary level through research and co-authoring a widely used Italian course for secondary schools.
Antonia has been Chair of Department (2009-2013), Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, Vice President of the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA), Editor of the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, and in the past two years has coordinated a capstone interdisciplinary unit for all majors in her Faculty. She is an ongoing member of the ‘National Strategy Group for the promotion of Italian in Australia’ and of the editorial board of the leading Italian journal Studi Italiani di Linguistica Teorica e Applicata (SILTA).
