Biography
Stuart Cunningham AM is Distinguished Professor of Media and Communications, Queensland University of Technology. He directed the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation, the first Centre of Excellence based in the humanities, from 2005 to 2014. He has served in leadership roles in advocacy, advice and governance in research and higher education, and in the screen and library sectors, including: President of the Council for Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences; Treasurer and Council Member, Australian Academy of the Humanities; Director, Screen Queensland; Member, Library Board of Queensland; Panel Member, National Cultural Policy reference group; Board Member, Australian Film Commission; Member, Cooperative Research Centre Committee; Member, ARC College of Experts and Chair of the Humanities and Creative Arts Panel of the College.
Honours and awards include: Member of the Order of Australia; inaugural Fellow of Cultural and Communication Studies Section, Australian Academy of the Humanities; Fellow of the UK-based Academy of Social Sciences; Fulbright Senior Scholar, Leverhulme Foundation Visitor.
Recent books include Hidden Innovation: Policy, Industry and the Creative Sector (2014), the co-authored Wanghong as Social Media Entertainment: The new intersection of Hollywood and Silicon Valley (2019), Key Concepts in Creative Industries (2013), Screen Distribution and the New King Kongs of the Online World (2013), and Media Economics (2015), and the co-edited Creator Culture (2021), A Research Agenda for Creative Industries (2019), Digital Disruption: Cinema Moves Online (2012) and The Media and Communications in Australia (2014).
