Biography

Tony Birch is one of Australia’s most influential contemporary creative writers and public intellectuals. He is the author of four short fiction collections, three novels and a poetry collection. He has also published literary essays and critical articles in Australia and internationally. His books have been short-listed for and won numerous literary awards. His novel Ghost River won the 2016 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Indigenous Writing and in 2017 he was awarded the Patrick White Prize in recognition of his contribution to Australian literature. His novel The White Girl (UQP, 2019) won The Monthly fiction book of the year, 2019. Dr Birch’s writing in creative, activist and critical modes is a powerful contemporary voice for the recognition of social understanding, Indigenous knowledge, and climate justice.
