Biography

Dr Gaye Sculthorpe is Curator and Head of Oceania at The British Museum. After a distinguished career in museums and native title in Australia, since 2013 her work in the United Kingdom has focused on curatorial projects to improve public knowledge and understanding of Australian Indigenous history and cultures. This had been done working with Indigenous communities as well as Australian colleagues and institutions, particularly the Australian National University, of which she is a graduate. Her work is characterized by commitment to making museum collections more widely accessible. In 2017, Gaye was honoured by ANU as Indigenous Alumna of the Year. Her Aboriginal ancestors are from northeast Tasmania.
